Woodlands X-treme...we're in tents

Things look a lot different when they are viewed in retrospect. At the beginning of this week I envisioned a week of excitement: guys that I could talk to on a deep and personal level; amazing unity out of dangerous circumstances, campers that stood head and shoulders above the rest of camp, and a great big family around a campfire.  The week looks a lot different now. In fact, it was nothing like I thought it would be, instead God gave me a bunch of guys that I had trouble talking to, problems with disunity in the group, and the one kid that just wouldn't behave.

But God did amazing things with this week. Somehow through all the kayaking, rock climbing, high ropes and everything else, the Holy Spirit broke through to my guys. The guys changed more over the course of the week than I could have ever imagined. The reality of Jesus' love broke down the biggest walls and it was immediately obvious.

As I'm typing, I'm trying to think of how to put this past week into words. I think that I'm attempting a task that is very near to impossible. Maybe you should just ask me to tell you about it all at some point.

A New Hope

Creation groans.

For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:18-28

April 20, 1999- Columbine High School shootings
September 11, 2001- Attack on the World Trade Center
April 16, 2007- Virginia Tech shooting

I have images in my head from each of these three days that will probably never leave me. They are reminders of the state of the world we live in. It's not right. These things shouldn't happen. No, something should have happened differently. Those kids should not have died. Those people should never have done that. It's just wrong, but there is hope.

Reese Roper said it like this:
"This song's about Columbine High School. More importantly it's about something that I think we all lack, and it came across very clearly that day. It's just that we all need something solid to hope for beyond material things, and I think that everyone can find that in the love of Jesus Christ."
A New Hope
by Five Iron Frenzy

Amy's going back to school today
Elation, jubilation screams from her face
Did the halls smell of gunpowder still
What made the human heart dark enough to kill?
A new hope where is your freedom?
A new hope! Cast off your burdens!
A darker world was behind this one
Cryptic it hides beneath perception
We all saw it on that day
Stunned we stood stuttering
What did the news say?
A new hope! Where is your freedom?
A new hope ! Here is your freedom!

Peace guides us
By hope we steer
Our dark hearts salvaged
We live without fear.
Hope is freedom!

One day we will be free to grasp the object of our hope. There is freedom in Jesus Christ. We hope in him. Hope is freedom. We groan to be free. All creation groans for freedom. We hope for what we cannot see, but one day, soon we will see it and we will be free.

My prayers are with you all.

A Love Supreme

...believe...

This past December I found myself soaking in the Gospel of John. After a conversation I had the other day I went back and found my notes from four months ago and sat back down to be astounded once again.

John is definitely my favorite writer in the New Testament. The writing in his gospel is just so good and the themes, images and connections with the rest of scripture are simply mind-blowing. As I scanned through my notes I came across one little journal entry from the day I noticed a word that John used like it was going out of style. Believe. John uses this word in his gospel more than the writers of the other gospels use it combined.

John 1:7- He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him.

John 3:12- If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things?

John 3:16- “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 4:42- They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”

John 5:46- For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote of me.

John 6:29- Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”

John 6:36- Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”

John 7:38- Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”

John 8:24- I told you that you would die in your sins, for unless you believe that I am he you will die in your sins.”

John 11:27- She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

John 11:40- Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?”

John 12:36- While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”

John 12:46- I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.

John 14:1- “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.”

John 19:35- He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe.

John 20:29- Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

John 20: 31- but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

This is where our hope lies. Not in our belief, but in the One in whom we believe. Why do we doubt? Why do we falter? Why is it so flippin' hard to trust in God? It's not because of God, it's because of us. We just have to believe, hold onto Him no matter what happens. Believe that He is who He is, and since He is who He is, we know that He is in control and our supreme joy should come from giving our lives back to Him because He gave His life for us as He said He would. Don't stop.

My prayers are with you all.

Tommy can you hear me?

"Tommy" by The Who- the rock opera about a deaf, dumb and blind boy who "sure played some mean pinball."

I think if I made a list of things that I would like to do before I die one of the items would be to write and perform an epic rock opera based on a fairy tale. Or maybe I'll just do an adaptation of Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. There's a whole lot of potential for that. I really like fairy tales. They are full of themes that we see everyday in life.

Maybe that's also why I think that Dr. Seuss is incredible. Every time that I read O the Places You'll Go, I get fully inspired to go change the world. I still haven't figured that out yet. I've got an evil plan to save the world, just you wait till it's unfurled.

That's all for now.
Goodnight.
My prayers are with you all.

P.s.
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall,
And all the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.

I've been thinking about that a lot. No, seriously, I can't seem to get my mind off of it. Think about it, it could haunt you for a long time.

P.p.s.
I'm beginning to become convinced that more significant events in modern music history happened in the year 1969 than in any other year. I mean...Woodstock, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Abbey Road, Led Zeppelin's Debut album, John Lennon and Yoko, Diana Ross presents the Jackson 5...that's all I'm saying
